Authentic Travel Writing:
Taking the First Step

The allure of travel for self-discovery, for adventure, for work and for pleasure grants us the privileged opportunity to expand our understanding of the world we share. Travel feeds our imagination, enriches our vocabulary, validates our values and enlists our contribution to protect the physical and emotional benefits that discovery yields.

When we travel, we meet others as they are, equals on their own path. We often see first-hand what others do not: the effects of  poverty, hunger, health, education and climate change. We are not tourists but guests, knowledgeable and respectful of the rituals and traits that herald diversity. In this three-hour session, Carolyn will invite you to use curiosity as your compass and embrace authenticity in your storytelling, empowering you to share your personal experiences with confidence and flair. Drawing on a range of tools and tips, she will share the fundamentals of travel writing, and help you translate your experiences into a compelling inventory of stories to create a permanent record of your experience for others to learn from and enjoy.

Carolyn Ray is the Publisher and Editor-in-Chief of JourneyWoman, a beloved women’s travel publication established in 1994. Not only does she actively write travel articles but she also reviews hundreds of pitch letters and submissions a month from regular contributors and aspiring travel writers. With her colleagues from the Society of American Travel Writers, Carolyn is offering a follow-up writing coaching class to those who are interested.
