Saving our Ship: How to Keep Your Balance while Fighting for Earth

As I write this, we are suffering through a global heat wave. The climate crisis is upon us now. How do we continue to confront this devastating reality with honesty and openness, without despair or surrender? We write, we fight. Some of the strategies that I have found useful are elegies, protests, and the incorporation of science as well as spiritual traditions. We will begin with a brief meditation, then do several rounds of free-writing, jumping off from short poems; we will share our writing voluntarily, as time permits.

Barbara Ungar’s latest book of poems, Save Our Ship, won the Snyder Prize from Ashland Poetry Press and was named to Kirkus Reviews’ Best Books of 2019. A limited-edition chapbook, EDGE (Evolutionarily Distinct and Globally Endangered) focuses on the sixth extinction. Prior books include Immortal Medusa, named to Kirkus Reviews’ Best Books of 2015, and CharlotteBrontë, You Ruined My Life. The Origin of the Milky Way won the Gival Prize and a silver Independent Publishers award. A professor at the College of Saint Rose in Albany, NY, she lives in Saratoga Springs.
