Hone Your Submission and Pitch Letters to Journals and Magazines

6 PM Eastern Time

This is a workshop extension of the event, “Submitting Nonfiction Essays to Magazines or Journals.”

This series of three 90-minute workshops will help you develop and polish your pitch and submission letters to editors. As well, through the process, you will strengthen your pitch or the description of your submission and the letter to the editor. You will have the option to share your pitch/submission letters anonymously if you prefer. This workshop will be a safe space for you to explore your ideas and discover what is most alive in your work.

SESSION 1: In the first session, we will become more acquainted and you can introduce yourself to the group. I will clarify workshop etiquette and share a sheet that will support us all to give supportive and safe feedback. If you have a pitch or submission letter you would like to share during that first session please bring it along with a list of one or more publications that are a good fit for the piece or pitch. For those who are new to pitching, we will review the pitch/submission letter template. We will also use this time to workshop essay/article ideas and make plans for how next steps.

SESSION 2: The second session will give us all a chance to review the successes and challenges faced in the process of pitches and submissions. We will celebrate both together and discover new avenues and energy to persist in the submissions process. We will review not only our submission/pitch activities but also how we were able to fit this into our calendar and discuss ways to enable persistence with the process. This will also include the option to workshop new pitch ideas, new submissions, or revamp old ones.

SESSION 3: The third session will be a continuation of the second with a review of recent pitch calls and a creative discussion of ideas that will be similar to an editorial meeting. If you like, bring a pitch call of your choice and a few ideas that you can share to flesh out and fine-tune your idea.

If you’re ready, bring your pitch drafts to the first session! For those who sign up for all three sessions, they'll receive a one-on-one session with Bethany about their work, a pitch, or other.
