Unstitching the Heavens with Metaphor

When we’re stuck in life or in our creative pursuits, it can feel as Emily Dickinson wrote: “I saw no Way–the Heavens were stitched.” Using metaphor consciously, we’ll play with unstitching whatever cocoons or corners we’re stuck in, or at least with seeing our challenges differently, as opportunities, gifts, and tools.

Metaphors come in the forms of assumptions, language, and of course in our dreams. In our time together we’ll work with personal and cultural metaphors, looking at them as masks we can try on to find the new faces they can help us show the world and ourselves. We’ll read poetry and creative nonfiction, discuss what we find, and do some of our own writing in any genre we use to express ourselves. Participants will have an opportunity to share their writing or to just listen.

Participants can expect to take away a clean window on life from which they can write some new work and rework pieces that they might be frustrated with or that need new frames altogether.

Ellen Metrick is fully-baptized umbraphile (path of eclipse totality, Wind River Basin, Wyoming, U.S.A., August 21, 2017) and student of dreams. A Colorado writer and past San Miguel County poet laureate, she has edited and written for local and regional publications for the past 20 years and performed across Colorado, both independently and as part of EAR, a performance poetry trio, and now as part of Telluwriters, a traveling troupe of San Miguel County poets laureate with Western Slope poet laureate Art Goodtimes.
