Po-Chronos: Tracking Time in a Poem

Time-travel isn’t just for science-fiction! A poem can return to the past, advance to t he future, stay in the present, all on one page. Putting aside quantum-physics notions of simultaneous time and parallel realities, our perceptions—and our awareness of them—exist only in the now moment we exist: our consciousness is a constantly shifting convergence of past, present, and future. So, how do we craft a poem to convey that authentic experience of time? How do we shape our subject matter as a function of time without turning it into a chronologically ordered story? We will explore multiple time-traveling poems and, if there’s time (ha!), draft new poems and/or revise old poems through this lens.

Marj Hahne is a freelance editor, writer, and writing teacher, and a 2015 MFA graduate from the Rainier Writing Workshop, with a concentration in poetry. She has performed and taught at over 100 venues around the country, as well as been featured on public radio and television programs. Her poems have appeared in literary journals, anthologies, art exhibits, and dance performances. Committed to making poetry hospitable for everyone, she launched a YouTube channel featuring videos in which she reads poems to dogs and pairs poems with craft beers, craft spirits, and coffees.
