History in the Present

It's often difficult to tell a complete story without describing certain aspects of history, but how much history do you integrate to bring a contemporary novel to life? This workshop will focus on considerations and techniques for bringing history into present day narratives to create the most complete picture as possible. We will reflect on our own projects through discussion, read examples of relevant work, and engage in writing activities that generate content for our drafts in a supportive, encouraging environment.

Liz Santiago is the founder of The Untold Narratives whose aim is to create more complex, whole narratives one story at a time. Her debut novel, The Moonlit Vine, interweaves historical vignettes into present day storytelling. She has a PhD from Lesley University, Master’s degree from Harvard University, and BFA in Creative Writing from Emerson College.
