Free Write with Yun Wei - Women's voices from around the world - 8 AM ET
Yun Wei received her MFA in poetry from Brooklyn College and studied at Georgetown University and London School of Economics. She has been awarded second place in the Boulevard Poetry Contest and first place in the Geneva Literary Prizes. Her work appears in over 15 journals, including Brooklyn Rail, Michigan Quarterly, Shenandoah, Poetry Northwest and Wigleaf. Her debut novel is represented by Levine Greenberg Rostan Literary Agency. She works in global health in Switzerland, where she relies on chocolate and tears to survive mountain sports.
Poetry Workshop: A Sense of Wonder with Carmen Bugan ($99) - 11AM ET
The sense of wonder animates poetry from all the languages and cultures but the expressions of it vary across languages. In this workshop we look at several English translations of poems on the theme of wonder and write our own translations. We will work with poems from Italian (Eugenio Montale), French (Jacques Prevert), and Romanian (Ana Blandiana). Inspired by the exercise in translation, participants will write their own poems on wonder.
Carmen Bugan's most recent books are the collection of poems Time Being (Shearsman, 2022), and the book of essays Poetry and the Language of Oppression: Essays on Politics and Poetics (Oxford University Press, 2021). Her prize-winning memoir, Burying the Typewriter: Childhood Under the Eye of the Secret Police (Picador, 2012), was a BBC Radio 4 Book of the Week, and her new and selected poems, Lilies from America (Shearsman, 2019), was a Poetry Book Society Special Commendation. She teaches literature and creative writing at New York University Abu Dhabi.
