Slip-Ups, Head-Hops and
How to Avoid the
Most Common Writer Mistakes
As writers we all have our Achilles heels and our habitual writing patterns, ones that often get unfavorably critiqued. In this workshop, we'll take a tour of the most confounding and learn a plan to make sure our next drafts are tighter, better and more interesting. Through examples and exercises we'll review:
Show don't Tell - overusing narrative
Point of View - preferences and pitfalls
Commas, Semi-colons, hyphens and dashes - On My!
Adverbs and other extraneous words
Tropes - meeting reader expectations
Bring your current WIP and take notes. You will receive handouts of examples given. For Fiction and Nonfiction - all writing levels.
Cathleen O’Connor, PhD is a lifelong New York resident, 30-year member of the Guild and current Chair of the Board of Directors. She is on the faculty of the IWWG having taught creative writing, the power of the first chapter for fiction, and how to create a successful anthology.
She is a book layout specialist for self-published authors and as an editor she provides development and line editing services. She is a fan of the editorial assessment that provides an overview of a draft manuscript to highlight areas where a deeper dive is needed.
I now understand why writers profusely thank their editors in their acknowledgments. Cathleen combined her excellent developmental editing skills with her intuitive ones to turn my book into a manuscript that publishers wanted. ~~Paula Petry, A Mother’s Courage to Awaken(Mango, 2020)
