The Personal is Political -- Social Justice Essays, Memoir, and the Connecting of the Two



Author Michelle Bowdler will lead a conversation on hybrid memoir and essay writing that include social justice themes and the ways in which careful sharing of personal material can enhance one’s work. The course will include several free writing exercises, sharing one’s work if one chooses, and lively conversation.


Michelle Bowdler is the author of Is Rape a Crime? A Memoir, an Investigation, and a Manifesto (Flatiron Books 2020). Her debut book was longlisted for the National Book Award, named a Must Read by TIME Magazine and on the 2020 Best Books list for the Boston Globe and Publisher’s Weekly. She is the recipient of a Barbara Deming Memorial Award and has been a Fellow at MacDowell and Ragdale. Her essays have been published in the New York Times, two anthologies, Lit Hub, Psychology Today, Hippocampus and other literary magazines.
